Best Free Stem Separation Software in 2026 (Tested & Compared)

We tested the most popular free stem separation tools on real tracks. Here is what actually works, what does not, and which tool gives you the cleanest vocals, drums, and instrumentals without paying a subscription.

Best Free Stem Separation Software in 2026 (Tested & Compared)

Stem separation has come a long way. A few years ago, isolating vocals from a song meant expensive plugins and mediocre results. Today, AI-powered tools can pull apart a mixed track into clean vocals, drums, bass, and instrumentals — and some of them are completely free.

But "free" means different things to different tools. Some give you a few minutes free, then charge per song. Some require uploads to cloud servers. Some work offline but limit quality. Here is an honest breakdown of what is actually available in 2026.

What we tested

We ran the same set of tracks through the most popular free and freemium stem separation tools to compare quality, speed, and usability. The tracks included a hip-hop instrumental, a pop song with dense production, and a live recording with bleed.

The tools

Quota Stems (Free, desktop, offline)

Quota Stems is a standalone desktop app for macOS and Windows. It uses Demucs for separation and runs entirely on your machine. No uploads, no accounts, no credit system, no limits.

What makes it different: - Paste a URL (including YouTube playlists) and it downloads + separates automatically - Export stems as video (MP4) keeping the original video stream - Export ready-to-open Ableton Live 12 projects with stems laid out - Non-destructive 4-stem separation (stems recombine perfectly) - Advanced 6-stem mode adds Piano and Guitar - Batch processing for folders and playlists - Completely free with no restrictions

Quality: Excellent. Uses the same Demucs model as professional tools. Vocals come out clean, drums are punchy, minimal artifacts on most material.

Best for: Producers who want offline processing, URL import, video stem export, or Ableton integration. Anyone who does not want to deal with upload limits or subscriptions.

LALAL.AI (Freemium, cloud)

LALAL.AI is a web-based service. You upload a file, it processes on their servers, and you download the result. The free tier gives you 10 minutes of processing. After that, pricing starts at around $15/month.

Quality: Good on the paid tiers. The free tier uses a lower-quality model. Vocals are generally clean but some artifacts on complex mixes.

Best for: Quick one-off separations when you do not want to install software.

Limitations: Cloud-only (your files are uploaded), free tier is very limited, subscription pricing adds up.

Demucs (Free, open source, command line)

Demucs is the underlying AI model that powers many stem separation tools (including Quota Stems). You can run it directly from the command line if you are comfortable with Python.

Quality: Same as Quota Stems — it is the same model. Excellent results.

Best for: Developers and technical users who want maximum control.

Limitations: No graphical interface. Requires Python, pip, and command-line comfort. No URL import, no Ableton export, no video support. You get raw WAV outputs only.

Splitter.ai (Freemium, cloud)

Similar to LALAL.AI — upload a file, get stems back. Free tier has quality and length limitations.

Quality: Decent but noticeably below Demucs-based tools on complex material.

Best for: Casual use when you need a quick split and do not mind cloud processing.

The verdict

If you want the best free option with no compromises, Quota Stems is the clear choice. It gives you Demucs-quality separation, runs offline, has no limits, and adds features (URL import, video export, Ableton projects) that no other free tool offers.

If you need something without installing software and only need to split a few tracks, LALAL.AI or Splitter.ai work but you will hit limits quickly.

If you are technical and want raw Demucs output, run it from the command line — but you will miss the workflow features.
